Scarlett Johansson talks about her new dark comedy Rough Night movie and taking on comedy.
What would you do if your bachelorette party turned into a crime scene? For Scarlett Johansson and her gal pal co-stars Kate McKinnon, Zoe Kravtiz, Ilana Glazer and Jillian Bell, the celebrations turn into a nightmare sort of like Bridesmaids, but worse.
“This movie might seem to be about friends who find themselves in a not-so-average bachelorette party through a series of very over-the-top events, but the movie is really about friendship,” says Scarlett Johansson, about Rough Night. “We often can take for granted the people that know us the best… It’s sort of cautionary tale about taking that for granted – and also it’s a celebration of that kind of deep friendship. Underneath this wild, R-rated comedy is a movie with a very warm heart about friendship.”
Rough Night, follows five friends from college who reunite when they rent a beach house in Miami for a wild bachelorette weekend that goes completely off the rails. Just when all hope is lost, they realize there’s more to the story than they could’ve ever imagined.
Johansson says she jumped at the chance to do a comedy with a bunch of women and is excited by the idea of making people laugh. “I read the script and it was just so funny,” she says. “It made me laugh out loud, and I’m not a person that laughs out loud. It made me belly laugh. I just loved how real the relationships were between these girls and how very earnest the characters were. I responded to these characters and how very real and raw they are.”
Rough Night opens in theatres on June 16.
