Gal Gadot talks about taking on the star role in the upcoming Wonder Woman movie and the importance of being a female role model.
Gadot told Interview Magazine that when she started out as an actress in Los Angeles, she originally told producers and directors that she was open to any kind of role. But as she began her career things changed for the Israeli-born beauty who wanted to make a more of an impact. She decided to change her career course by requesting more women characters of substance and as she put it: “be able to show the stronger side of women.”
Gadot said, “I didn’t want to do the obvious role that you see in Hollywood most of the time, which is the heartbroken girl who’s waiting to be rescued by the guy, blah, blah, blah.”
So, it was naturally fitting that Gadot was cast as the most famous super heroine of all time in Batman v Superman leading to the upcoming Justice League and her own stand alone Wonder Woman movie this June.
Wonder Woman follows the story of Diana, Princess of the Amazons. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, Diana meets an American pilot (Chris Pine) who tells her about the massive conflict that’s raging in the outside world. Convinced that she can stop the threat, Diana leaves her home for the first time. Fighting alongside men in a war to end all wars, she finally discovers her full powers and true destiny.
But landing the character was nerve wracking. She recently revealed to W Magazine that to take the edge of the audition, she channeled a little help from another strong woman.
“When I auditioned for Batman v Superman, I didn’t know it was for Wonder Woman,” Gadot admitted. “Director Zack Snyder asked me to do a camera test. That was torture. They were looking at six or seven girls, and we were all in separate trailers and were told to stay inside until they called us. Waiting is my Enemy Number One, and I was losing my mind. So, I decided to put on Beyoncé.“Who runs the world? Girls! I just started to dance, and I let my anxiety go. Thank you, Beyoncé!”
Now that Gadot has landed, and taken the huge responsibility, for this strong character she’s not taking it for granted. She believes that Diana “Wonder Woman” is more than a pretty face.
“She doesn’t see that difference between any gender difference. It’s not even an issue, you know,” she tells Collider.com. “She comes from this world where men and women are equal and it’s not a thing to be a man or to be a woman. She feels that she can do everything and she will go for it. She’s a peace seeker; she wouldn’t go and look to start a battle or a fight. She would try to solve it in any other different way, but I think that’s what’s beautiful about Wonder Woman.”
As for the upcoming movie, Gadot says both guys and girls will enjoy it.
“This is such a universal story. It’s such a universal story,” she continues. “It’s a beautiful story about a beautiful soul, that tried to save the world and do better. She doesn’t know much of what she’s getting into. She’s very naive, but her love of life is educating her. It’s just a beautiful love story about a girl who is growing up.”
Wonder Woman movie opens in theatres on June 2 and stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, David Thewlis, Connie Nielson and Danny Huston.
