This new Canadian beauty brand is using ancient philosophy to revolutionize the natural skincare game.
After coming home one day to find her baby daughter slathered in her moisturizer, Toronto-based Lisa Mattam — a former pharmaceutical executive— became concerned that it would be harmful to her skin. So, she thought, if it’s bad for my daughter’s skin, why am I putting it on mine?
This led her to create Sahajan, an organic skincare and hair care line inspired by Ayurveda, the 5,000-year-old healing practice rooted in India.
“The belief behind Ayurveda is that the body needs to be in balance,” Mattam said at the Sahajan product launch in Toronto. “If it’s not, the body gets sick. In my research I found there was more to these home remedies. When I was told to put coconut oil in my hair, or turmeric on a pimple, there was science behind it. A science that’s thousands of years old.”
Manufactured in Canada, each product was meticulously formulated with input from Ayurvedic doctors using ingredients that provide healing and nourishment for the skin. Some of these ingredients include coconut oil, gotu kola (a herb in the parsley family that encourages collagen production), almond oil, vitamin C-rich amla (or Indian gooseberry) oil, honey, gotu kola, an herb that supports collagen production, neem and sesame oil.
The Sahajan line consists of five products: Nourish Face Cream, Restorative Eye Cream, Protective Face Serum, Nurture Hair Oil and Ritual Body Oil. You can also test out each product with the Discovery Kit featuring sample sizes of each product.
If you’re worried about using oils on your face and skin, fear not. These products absorb easily into the skin. For example, the body oil is light and leaves skin feeling soft and nourished all day. It also gives your skin a little glow!
The line is all natural and contains no toxins, chemicals or artificial colours.
