She may have started out as a young, troubled, pregnant teen in The Secret Life of the American Teenager, but Shailene Woodley is anything but naïve.
The star, 22, is quickly making her mark in Hollywood with roles that show her talented range as an actor. From the fearless hero in Divergent to the feisty teen in The Descendents to the strong, emotional girl with cancer in The Fault in Our Stars, Woodley is proving to be one the best actors of her generation.
Although fans are waiting with bated breath to see their hero Tris in the upcoming Divergent sequel, Insurgent, out next year, Woodley is stepping down from the blockbuster world and kicking things up in the indie realm with her, White Bird in a Blizzard, directed by Gregg Araki (Mysterious Skin).
In the movie, Woodley plays Kat Connor, a 17-year-old girl whose mother (Eva Green) inexplicably goes missing. Having lived in a stifled, emotionally repressed household, Kat barely registers her mother’s absence and doesn’t blame her doormat of a father, Brock (Christopher Meloni), for her absence. She’s instead diving head first into love with her boyfriend (Shiloh Fernandez) and beginning her own sexual revolution.
For Woodley, that meant doing a nude sex scene, with an older man (Thomas Jane) who for some actors is daunting, but not for the daring star.
“I felt like I loved the character, and I felt like I loved the story, and I felt like nudity is a part of real life,” Shailene explained to HollywoodLife.com. “Everyone was freaked out because I’m nude, but in real life, when I have sex, I’m naked. I don’t have a bra on, and I don’t usually have panties on. So let’s make a real movie! Let’s bring truth to the scene!” she admitted to Vulture.
But the movie is more than Woodley’s character falling madly, deeply in love. It’s a story that deals with a depth of emotion surrounding the family unit. As time passes and her mom is nowhere to be found, Kat begins to come to grips with how the disappearance of her mother affects her and begins to find herself confronted with the truth about her mother’s departure.
“I think when you’re a teenager, you’re exploring all different parts of yourself for the first time, whether it be cheating on a test, to having a first boyfriend, to making love for the first time, to getting in your first big fights with your parents,” she told People. “There are so many different things that are happening, and a lot of films that deal with young people capture many of those regions, but they sort of leave that sexuality component out of it,” she added.
White Bird in a Blizzard opens October 24 and stars Shailene Woodley, Eva Green, Christopher Meloni, Shiloh Fernandez, Gabourey Sidibe, Thomas Jane & Angela Bassett.
