What do Kourtney Kardashian, Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba and just about all of Hollywood have in common when it comes to skincare? The answer lies in the trendy, buzzed about Photo LED Light Therapy Mask. Do they really work?
You may have seen those freaky looking masks lit up on the faces of celebrities all over Instagram. What are they? They’re Light Therapy Masks, which are said to help your skin regenerate and clear up a wide array of skin concerns such as acne, smooth wrinkles and much more.
There was a time, like all things new and “techy,” that you couldn’t afford or be able to get your hands on one of those Freaky Friday the 13th-style light therapy masks that medical spas were using on clients to conduct skin light therapy.
But now, more companies are making it easier for all of us to enjoy the benefits of light treatments without leaving the comfort of your own home.
What exactly are they and what do they do? These masks are created with tiny LED lights on the inside of the mask and are programmed to emit different colours that have been proven to treat different skin concerns.
LED (light emitting diodes) are basically infrared lights that are found in different wavelengths, depending on the color. These lights send waves deep into the skin to trigger different reactions. The reactions caused by the different lights can trigger the skin to do things like stimulate cell regeneration or eliminate bacteria.
The LED Light Therapy Masks normally have three lights: red, blue and green. Some brands are now offering many more light choices but these are the aforementioned are the standard.
What do they do?
Red – red light stimulates collagen production and is used to address fine lines, wrinkles, redness and inflammation.
Blue – blue light rays are proven to destroy acne-causing bacteria, minimize pores and heal acne faster.
Green – green light rays brighten dull skin and relaxes it. It penetrates about 0.5 mm into your skin. It’s suitable for mixed skin. It can improve the function of alternating use of cells and oxygen while calming the skin by reducing inflammation and redness.
With these light therapy mask treatments, skin concerns such as fine lines, wrinkles, acne, scarring, brown spots and redness can be healed over the course of four weeks.
Do they work? The answer from most dermatologists, and reviews from those who’ve been dedicated to using them, is yes. But the kicker is, you have to stick with it, which most people find hard to do. Experts say you won’t begin to see results in your skin until four weeks. They answer is to stay dedicated.
Just make it part of your nightly TV routine. Use the mask for 20 minutes per light session (you can use different lights per session if you like) while watching your favourite TV show every night after cleansing and moisturizing. It’s advised to do this at least three times per week or more. It’s certainly beats using a handheld device to treat one area at a time, which can take hours!
I’m currently using one and I’ll update my personal results in four weeks. Stay tuned!
