Oscar winner Kate Winslet talks about enduring the cold in The Mountain Between Us movie drama about strangers brought together by fate, and try to survive.
The film follows the story of Photojournalist Alex Martin (Winslet) and surgeon Ben Bass (Elba) who have never met before, but they have at least one thing in common: both need to get back to Baltimore. She’s getting married the next day; he’s to perform emergency surgery.
When their flight out of Denver is cancelled, the two hire a charter plane to get home, but once they’re in the air, things go tragically wrong and the plane crashes. Stranded atop a snow-covered mountain with paltry provisions and no hope of rescue, Alex and Ben must work together — and trust each other — if they are to get out alive.
The actors and the crew filmed in the snowy mountains of Calgary, Alberta and admit the harsh winer weather was challenging to cope with, but it only added to the character development.
“As hard as it was, as scary as it was, I really did love it,” Winslet told ew.com. “It was quite frightening, but amazing at the same time because of how spectacularly beautiful it was.”
“There’s a funny thing that happens with actors,” she continued. “From the outside looking in people assume that it wouldn’t be as cold for the actors, that there would have been extra things or magical fairy dust sprinkled on them to make them not as cold as everybody else.” She laughs. “Just forget all that, because that does not come into play in this film at all.”
The Mountain Between Us GALA movie presentation debuts at TIFF 2017 on Sunday, September 10 and hits theaters on October 6.
