TIFF 2017: Jake Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany star in Stronger movie, based on the Jeff Bauman memoir, about losing his legs in the Boston Marathon bombing.
This inspiring true story of tragedy recounts the trying time when the lives of two people were forever altered by a terrifying act of violence of the Boston bombing.
Runner Erin Hurley (Maslany) was still a mile away from the finish line when the bombs went off. Her boyfriend, Jeff Bauman (Gyllenhaal), however, was right there in the line of fire, tragically losing his legs as a result.
The bombing’s immediate aftermath provides Jeff with an unexpected sense of purpose: he had seen one of the terrorists responsible for the blasts. He gives information to the FBI that proves instrumental in their investigation. Once that very public drama quiets down, Jeff’s personal drama, a challenge as much for his morale as his body, begins. With Erin by his side, Jeff will slowly recover, one arduous step at a time.
“The effects of it, and how it brings people together through tragedy is what I know Jeff wants,” Gyllenhaal told NBC’s Natalie Morales. “It’s a weird thing making a movie about somebody and you’re not far from the event having happened. If you’re going to put one word or adjective alongside [Jeff] hero would be one of them.”
Stronger movie makes it’s Gala debut at TIFF on Friday, September 8.
