Emily Blunt takes the stage at the Disney Blunt D23 Expo in Anaheim with director/producer Rob Marshall to talk about the much-anticipated return of the world’s most famous magical nanny.
Blunt talked a bit about her character and how she approached the role. “I needed to try to pay homage to Julie Andrews but carve out a new space for myself. And we were very loyal to the books,” says Blunt.
“I was incredibly honoured to be approached by Disney about directing a sequel. This is a brand new original film musical from top to bottom, which is very rare,” added Marshall. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to create something specifically for the screen.”
The original Mary Poppins movie starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, based on the first two volumes of P.L. Travers’ eight-book series, told the story of a “special nanny” who flew in on her magical umbrella, with carpet bag in tow, to bring a family closer together.
Mary Poppins Returns picks up 25 years later, set in the 1930s, to help a new family who’ve tragically lost their mother. Of course, magical adventures ensue.
“Mary Poppins Returns” hits theatres December 25, 2018.
