If you’re looking for a non-invasive way to help you achieve your fitness goals and rid stubborn fat for good, Coolsculpting may be what you’re looking for.
It’s that time of year when everyone is excited to start out fresh with new goals and, of course, new resolutions for weight loss. If you’re in that mindset you may have already started a new workout routine or joined a local gym. But no matter how hard we work out many of us still complain about certain areas of our bodies that just won’t budge.
And by budge, I mean refuse to go away. You know, those lumpy, hard, stubborn fat pockets that won’t break up with you no matter how hard you batter, insult and wish them away? This has been a problem for me most in the outer thigh area. There have been times when I’ve been in the best shape of my life and yet these little balls of fat refuse to melt away.
So what’s a girl to do? Since I’m hesitant about getting any type of surgery, I was interested in finding a procedure that would smooth my problem areas in a non-invasive way. To get more info, I went to the trusted folks at Dr. Mulholland’s SpaMedica in Toronto, where I learned about Coolsculpting.
What is Coolsculpting?
Coolsculpting is an FDA-cleared, non-surgical fat reduction treatment that uses a controlled cooling method in order to kill fat cells in a specific area of your body.
After the fat cells are frozen and crystallized, it takes approximately three months for them to be naturally eliminated from the body. The reason this procedure has become so popular —and gaining positive reviews— is that once the dead fat cells are eliminated, they are gone for good. The procedure promises to eliminate approximately 30% of fat in the treated area.
How does it work?
After getting a full and thorough consultation from my medical esthetician at SpaMedica, I decided I would treat a few areas of my body that have been nagging me: thighs, love handles and tummy. Because I was treating a few areas I split my appointments over the course of two days.
Once you are ready to go, the area you are treating—for example your tummy— gets sucked into a vacuum-like device, which then begins to freeze and crystallize fat for over the course of an hour. (If you’re going in for inner thighs, expect the procedure to take two hours, one hour per side. Outer thighs take longer, two hours per side.)
Having experienced the procedure, I can tell you that the first 60 seconds of being suctioned is a bit painful, which is natural because an area of your body is being pulled and pinched. However, after that short time passes, the pain subsides and becomes numb as the cooling sensation takes over. Over the course of an hour I remained comfortable and relaxed, read emails and even napped.
Once the area was complete the suction machine was removed. The esthetician then vigorously massaged the treated area immediately after for a few minutes (this part is painful, so hold your breath!) to help disperse and break down the cells.
Side effects
A great thing about Coolsculpting is that there is no down time. After the procedure was complete, I felt normal. Some individuals get what is called a “butter stick”—an effect where the area stays the shape of the suction for a while after the machine is removed. I did not experience this but if it happens, don’t worry, your skin will bounce back!
Later in the day, I experienced a few minor side effects. Some of these included itchiness, numbness and minor soreness. When I touched the treated area it felt like it was bruised, although there were no visible signs. For me personally, some of these side effects, like the itching, remained for about two weeks. The numbness in my belly area continued a bit longer but with no serious discomfort.
Who’s a candidate?
You need to consult a medical professional before doing any type of procedure. If you’re within a healthy weight range and are looking to enhance the appearance of your body by getting rid of stubborn fat areas like those I have mentioned, then Coolsculpting is something you may explore. In my personal opinion, and with the research I’ve gathered, Coolsculpting is something that should assist you in your fitness goals or to tackle areas of stubborn fat that will not go away. It should not be relied upon as an overall weight loss method.
Personal progress
Remember, this procedure takes patience. It’s been a month since I’ve completed the procedure and, although I notice a bit of progress in my belly area, I still have a ways to go. Please stay tuned for a final report and review when my three months has passed and I get re-measured and get my full results.
In terms of cost, you will need to consult with your medical provider but generally treating an area will cost an estimated $1,500 and up.
Special thanks to the professional staff at SpaMedica for providing me with a safe and comfortable environment and excellent care.

Due to the effective results and noninvasive nature of CoolSculpting, it has gained rapid fame. The alternative solution is to get liposuction but since it is a highly invasive surgical procedure, it is not an attractive option. http://trifectamedspanyc.com/
