There’s no magic pill when it comes to weight loss but there are certain foods that have been proven to boost your metabolism. Check out this list to get your engine started!

It’s no secret that good food can heal your insides, make you more energized and glow from the outside. But did you know that there are certain foods that can increase your metabolism.

Despite the fact that our metabolism slows down as we age, our body doesn’t want or require us to store more fat. The secret to lasting weight loss has been shown to be more about working with your body’s natural hunger and sleep rhythm, than dieting. Here’s a list to get your started. You’ll start to see a pattern!

Hot Peppers

Chili peppers have a compound called “capsaicin” that gives them their kick and the heat that in turn increased body temps, firing up your metabolism and helping you burn off excess calories. Eat them pickled, fresh or in flakes added to your your pasta, soup or sauces.

Green Tea

Green tea contains a substance known as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which has been scientifically proven to provide your metabolism with a temporary boost. EGCG is an antioxidant, which helps kickstart the hormone and neurotransmitter norepinephrine. Norepinephrine sends signals to your body, telling it to start breaking down fat cells and using their stored energy.

Grapefruit

Yup, the good old fashioned grapefruit makes a comeback! A medium-sized grapefruit has only 74 calories, but packs a whopping 15 grams of belly-filling pectin fiber. This fiber helps you feel full for a longer period of time, regulating hunger levels throughout the day. It’s also very high in vitamin C and potassium.

Oats

Oats are very high in fiber, and when your body needs to break down fiber-rich whole foods, it needs to work harder to burns the digestion process, therefore allowing you to burn more calories. Dietary fiber also helps regulate your appetite, making your feel full longer. But don’t by the sugary kinds. Organic and plain oats are best.

Omega-3 Fatty Fish

You’ve heard how Salmon, sardines, mackeral, tuna and other fish high in Omega-3 has great health benefits. But did you know that it also revs up the metabolism? The dietary action of omega-3 fatty acids is similar to that of protein by forcing your body to naturally burn more calories while helping you keep your appetite in check.

Lean Meats

Meat like lean chicken or turkey, which are high in protein help you burn more calories. In fact, it’s said that you burn about 30% of the calories the food contains during digestion (so a 300-calorie chicken breast requires about 90 calories to break it down). But don’t eat the skin!

There’s a pattern here. The higher the fibre content, the more calories your body will burn. Also, foods that are spicy heat up your body temps, which also kick starts your engine! Other foods high on the metabolism-revving list are lean chicken, lentils, berries, apples, spinach and green veggies, and eggs.
