Who stood out at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards? From Nicki Minaj’s wardrobe malfunction to Beyonce’s stellar performance to Miley Cyrus’ special date, this year’s VMA’s did not disappoint.

The MTV Video Music Awards would have gone off without a hitch this year if Nicki Minaj’s wardrobe had cooperated. The show, normally riddled with controversial moments, went fairly smoothly this year.

After sexily performing her new track “Anaconda” in a green sequined two-piece number, Minaj failed to complete a quick outfit change and had to hold her black mini dress together when she joined Ariana Grande and Jessie J on stage for the song “Bang Bang.” The rapper later told The Hollywood Reporter, “We ran out of time getting the dressed zipped up.”

Miley Cyrus, who lives for causing controversy and attention, was relatively low key this year. Instead of twerking and sticking her tongue out, the singer brought attention to the homeless by bringing a man, Jesse, as her date and letting him accept her award for “Wrecking Ball,” which won for Best Video. “I’m accepting this award for the 1.6 million homeless youth in this country. I know this because I am one of these people,” Jesse said.

Despite rumors about marriage troubles, Beyonce wowed the audience taking the stage for a whopping 15 minutes to perform a medley of songs from her latest album before accepting the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. She accepted the award from husband, Jay Z who was carrying daughter Blue Ivy along for the ride.

Aside from Beyonce’s and Nicki Minaj’s performances, other highlight performances included Iggy Azalea, Rita Ora, Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande.
