CHLOE GRACE MORETZ TALKS ABOUT BEING STUCK BETWEEN TWO WORLDS IN “IF I STAY” MOVIE
Will love draw her back down to earth? Chloe Grace Moretz talks about facing life and death in her new movie If I Stay and what it feels like to be in love.
Based on the New York Times best-selling novel by Gayle Forman, If I Stay, starring Chloe Grace Moretz, tells the gripping tale of what one young girl would do in the face of a life or death crisis that suspends her between this world and the next.
The movie follows Mia Hall (Moretz), a young girl who thinks she has hard decisions to make on whether to pursue her musical dreams as a cellist at Juilliard or follow a different path to be with the love of her life, Adam (Jamie Blackley). But what should have been a carefree family drive changes everything in an instant, and now her life hangs in the balance. Caught between life and death for one revealing day, Mia has only one decision left, which will not only decide her future but her ultimate fate.
Whether or not Mia chooses this world or the one beyond was something that intrigued Moretz and drew her to the part. “There is so much energy swirling around If I Stay, so many teenagers and YA readers are completely infatuated with this story, so it was exciting to get involved,” Moretz says. “I was really eager for the chance to try and do justice to Mia and her wrenching conflict.”
And, with any YA story, love plays pivotal role, something Moretz (who’s currently dating Brooklyn Beckham, Victoria and David’s son) says she can also relate to. “When you fall in love for the first time, it’s all new; you can hear your heart beat from across the world for that person,” she continues. “Gayle’s book depicts that beautifully and shows how love brings out all sorts of different strengths and weaknesses particularly when a catastrophe is involved.”
Even though Mia is set on her goals it’s this teen love that may be the breaking point to what path she’s destined for. “When you first meet Mia, all she has is this cello and the goal of Juilliard,” says Moretz. “No guy is going to get in the way of that. Adam comes in and pretty much flips Mia’s world on end. I mean, here’s this guy who’s a total god. He’s sexy, he sings and he plays the guitar…he’s every teenage girl’s dream! It was such a pleasure doing scenes with Jamie because he’s a brilliant actor. Our relationship felt organic and natural,” says Moretz.
If I Stay opens August 22 and stars starring Chloë Grace Moretz (“Carrie,” the “Kick-Ass” films), Mireille Enos (TV’s “The Killing,” “World War Z”); Joshua Leonard (“Higher Ground”); Jamie Blackley (“Snow White and the Huntsman”); and Stacy Keach (“Nebraska”).
