CAMERON DIAZ AND JASON SEGEL TALK “SEX TAPE” MOVIE AND BARING IT ALL FOR THE CAMERA
Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel talk about their new movie Sex Tape, getting into bed together and how they got those naked sex scenes just right.
In a world where celebrities become famous for their sex tapes, Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz try to rekindle their romance in their new movie Sex Tape.
In the movie, Jay (Jason Segel) and Annie (Cameron Diaz) are a married couple still very much in love, but ten years and two kids have cooled the passion. To get it back, they decide to make a video of themselves—on their iPad— trying out every position in “The Joy of Sex” in one marathon three-hour session. It seems like a great idea, until they discover that their most private video has gone public. In a panic, they begin a wild night of adventure – tracking down leads, roping in friends, duping Annie’s boss – all to reclaim their video, their reputation, their sanity, and, most importantly, their marriage.
“Jay works at a radio station, and each time he gets in a new generation of iPads, he hands off his old iPads with his fantastic playlists on them. Those iPads are connected to each other by the cloud – and that’s where the debacle begins,” Segel explains. “I’m a technology buff, I love technology, but I personally have a big fear of the cloud. No one quite understands it. In this movie, we get to make fun of how we’re becoming a real cloud culture – how we talk as if it were a real thing.”
When signing up for the role, Diaz, known for her incredibly sporty physique, expected to be shot in some compromising positions and felt comfortable knowing she was in good hands. “Considering that this is a film where we had to be naked with each other, here was a partnership where I could feel so safe and at the same time, completely playful,” Diaz says. “We could laugh and find humor in what we were doing and at the same time tell the story of these two people who really love each other in a real way. We’re not trying to be shocking just for the sake of shocking. Annie and Jay are doing some crazy stuff that they never thought they would ever do, and they’re doing it with somebody they each feel safe with. And that’s how I feel about Jason – he’s just the guy you can do that with.”
“Cameron is really game,” says Segel, “and she’s a student of comedy. One of my pet peeves is people who settle for pleasant instead of funny, and Cameron goes for it every time.”
But in order to get the sex scenes right, director Jake Kasden had to get into bed with the pair. “Oh my God, it was hilarious,” says Diaz of shooting the scenes. “The most hilarious aspect was that Jake had to be a part of it,” she laughs. “It was not just Jason and me. It was Jason and me and Jake. We had these moments when Jason and I were in bed or in some funny position and we’d look up and see Jake looming over us trying to figure out what the shot was going to be. And we’d ask ‘Hey, Jake, how’s it going?’ So, yes, the funniest part was how the three of us spent those days, with Jason and me half-naked and Jake in there with us, requesting, ‘Can you guys do it faster, faster, slower, a little higher, a little lower?’ Jake had full control of our sexual positions.”
Even though Diaz and Segel are making a fake sex tape for the sake of film, she does know the benefits of what could become of leaking one to get star status. “[People] can make careers out of it afterwards,” she told Eweekly.com. “Apparently they can go ahead and launch empires!”
Sex Tape opens July 18 and stars Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel, Rob Corddry, Ellie Kemper, and Rob Lowe.
