Funny gal Melissa McCarthy and cast talk about the hilarious new movie Tammy, where McCarthy takes center stage as the new queen of comedy.

Any great comedy will tell you that most of the funny stuff not only comes from the script, but also from the improv. In Tammy, it’s no different. Melissa McCarthy admits that in her new comedy, she and the cast laughed like “maniacs” all day and had fun making this story about a small town woman who has lost her way, in a big way.

Directed by Ben Falcone and produces by McCarthy, Will Ferrell and Andrew McKay, Tammy follows the hilarious adventures of a small town woman, Tammy Banks, who after losing her job, husband and car in
one day, wants to escape her life. With no money or transportation, her only way out is with her hard-partying grandmother, Pearl (Susan Sarandon). Their misadventures and brushes with the law lead them on a funny and heartfelt road trip she’ll never forget.

As both a producer and writer, McCarthy admits she’s gone into new territory with this movie.“Ben and I had always talked about writing a movie about real people who mess up and have to decide if they are going to keep making mistakes or change things,” McCarthy says. “If you’re having a terrible day and something ridiculous makes you laugh, that’s the best. We wanted to capture that feeling.”

In this video featurette, McCarthy talks about making the movie and her cast mates reveal what it’s like to work with her on set.

TAMMY opens July 2 and also stars, Allison Janney, Gary Cole, Mark Duplass, Dan Aykroyd, Kathy Bates, Sandra Oh and Toni Collette.
