Angelina Jolie dishes on how fun it was to play the evil Maleficent from the classic Sleeping Beauty tale, and says it’s a beautiful story that will give people something they weren’t expecting.

“We’ve respected the classic, we’ve tried to bring you what you love about the story,” says Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie in the new video featurette released by Disney. “We also hope  to bring a world that you’ve never seen before. It’s a very beautiful story, and I think it is very different from what people are going to expect,” she adds.

Jolie also told Entertainment Weekly that she loved diving into this dark, villainous character. “I was quite sad to put my staff down and put my horns away because somehow, she just lives in a different world,” she said. “But I did have to take my staff home to practice walking with it in my cloak. Then I would go outside and scream at the bushes to expand my voice and play with my voice. So, mom was a bit nutso for a period,” Jolie quipped.

In the classic never-before-told story of Sleeping Beauty’s famous villain, we see Maleficent as beautiful pure-hearted young woman who lives a idyllic life in a peaceful forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatenens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to become the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal, an act that costs her wings and turns her pure heart to stone turing her into “The Mistress of All Evil.”

Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading King’s successor and as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora that upon her sixteenth birthday she shall prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and fall into a sleep like death.

Over the next sixteen years Maleficent comes across the young princess many times and comes to realise that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the kingdom and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well. She befriends the princess in hopes of keeping her away from the curse she placed upon her.

Elle Fanning plays the role of Princess Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) in the film, and Jolie’s daughter Vivienne plays the young Aurora.
