The world of entertainment always keeps up on our toes, but here is a small list of some major headlines that had our heads spinning.

Miley Cyrus at the Video Music Awards

This has been the year of Miley and her crazy antics. Beginning with chopping off her long locks in favour of a short, sassy, platinum blond pixie cut and ending with her highly controversial performance at the MTV Video Music Awards where she gyrated and twerked on much older co-performer, Robin Thicke. Many have criticized her actions as being in bad taste while others defended her saying she is doing what most 20 years old do. Whichever the case, one thing’s clear: Miley Cyrus owned 2013!

Viewers were shocked when beloved family dog, Brian Griffin, was hit by a car and killed on Family Guy since the death came out of nowhere and pertained to one of the most beloved characters on the show. Many fans are in denial and believe that Brian will somehow return for future episodes while others believe that Brian’s death was inevitable and even prophesied in the show’s previous seasons. Regardless of the reason, the death was one of the saddest and most shocking events on TV this year.

Red Wedding scene in Game of Thrones

Arguably the most shocking moment in recent television history, the Red Death massacre scene in Game of Thrones was one that was talked about for weeks afterwards. The surprise attack initiated by Lord Walder Frey saw the death of King Robb Stark, his wife Queen Talisa, and his mother Catelyn Stark as well as more than 3000 of his men. The episode forced the GOT fandom to mourn the loss of some of the show’s most loved characters in George R.R. Martin’s most stunning turn of events in the series thus far.

Death of Paul Walker

In an eerie incident of life imitating art, Fast and the Furious star, Paul Walker’s life came to a sudden end in a fiery car crash. While a passenger in a car driven by friend, Roger Rodas, Walker and Rodas lost their lives when the car swerved out of control and crashed. The actor’s sudden death has made people wonder what will happen with the forthcoming Fast and the Furious movies.

Beyonce Lip Synching at Obama’s Inauguration

For some reason, people went nuts when it was revealed that Beyonce wasn’t singing live at Obama’s inauguration earlier this year. The beloved singer was chosen by Obama himself to sing  “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the official ceremony. Everyone had an opinion on this, including soul great Aretha Franklin who defended Queen Bey’s decision. Never one to let the haters get her down, Beyonce showed the world what we always knew she was capable of when she sand the national anthem live during the Superbowl Half Time Show press conference.

Death of Cory Monteith

Glee lost one of its main stars this year when Cory Monteith lost his life to an accidental overdose of alcohol and heroine. Monteith had previously spoken about his battle with drug addiction, but no one, not even his girlfriend Lea Michele, knew about his relapse. Glee aired a special tribute episode explaining Monteith’s character’s departure before going on hiatus to figure out where to go from there.

Paula Deen called a racist

Paula Deen stuck her foot in her mouth when it was revealed that she regularly uses the N-word. Instead of denying the allegations, Deen went on to confirm the statement causing major backlash not just from the public, but also from her sponsors. Her admission lost her a show on the Food Network as well the release of her upcoming book.

Amanda-BynesAmanda Bynes hospitalized           

After a couple of years of absurd and newsworthy tweets (mostly about who was and wasn’t ugly and her love/hate relationship with Drake) which escalated to odd behaviour, Amanda Bynes finally received the help she needed when she was arrested for starting a fire in a neighbour’s driveway. The former teen actress was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and was reported to be doing extremely well in hospital. She has since been released and on her way to recovery.

James Gandolfini Dies Suddenly

While at the Taormina Film Festival in Sicily with his son, Soprano’s star James Gandolfini died suddenly in his hotel room of a heart attack completely shocking the world. Gandolfini, 51, was discovered by his 13-year-old son, Michael, who found his father unconscious in the hotel bathroom. Beloved as an actor and a person, many celebrities and politicians took to social media to pay their tributes to the late actor and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band even dedicated a performance of Born To Run.

Royal Baby Arrives

Since the day Prince William married Kate Middleton, the world waited with bated breath for the famous royal couple to have a baby. Media and fans clung to their TV sets worldwide when the Duchess of Cambridge finally went into labour on July 22, giving birth to His Royal Highness Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge at St Mary’s hospital in Paddington, Westminster.
