Sookie taps into her faerie powers and awakens the vamp that killed her parents. But on the other side of town, Bill and Eric take opposing sides on a pending vamp vs. humans war.

True Blood Season 5, Episode 8, “Somebody that I Used To Know”—It’s really hard to take things seriously this season. I was hoping that after hanging in through the first half of the season, that things would magically pick up. It’s not too much to ask for; we are in Bon Temp after all. I suppose we’ll have to deal with most of the unnecessary storylines stretch on until the end. Even so, there were some intriguing moments in this episode.

What the heck is up with this Shifter story and how bizarre and awkward was it to watch Sam Merlotte hold and console himself? (It was actually Luna who shifted into his image hilarious to watch.) Can you say, cheeseball!? It’s just another storyline trying incredibly hard to keep all of these characters in tact. I do think that Hoyte’s mother—”the fat, cheeto-eating lady” Luna sensed in the vigilante house where Jessica was being held captive by the hicks and Hoyte)—will play heavily in this story. Perhaps she’s the leader?

I’ll mention the Terry/Patrick story for just a moment, because, again, who cares about that boring storyline. But it does give Arlene and Lafayette a part in the story. As Lafayette embraces his inner Medium, he channels the woman Terry killed in Iraq that put the curse on his whole unit. Lafayette reveals that she will call off the fire monster curse when one of the two guys dies. So basically, Terry needs to kill Patrick.  Upon hearing this, Patrick bolts.

Back to the main storyline, Bill and Eric and the mainstreaming, Lilith-worshipping gang go back to the Vampire Authority headquarters after their Lilith-inducing high to brainstorm on a way to put vampires at the top of the food chain, Bill pipes in and suggests that all TruBlood factories be bombed forcing all vampires to feed on humans. This surprises Eric, who has not jumped on this ludicrous bandwagon. Bad Bill is now on board on “evolving” into the vampire monster he has been trying to avoid most of his supernatural life.

In Bon Temps, Sookie has her own issues. Last week it ended with her trying to get rid of all of powers. Jason stops her and says they’ll need her powers to find the vampire who killed their parents. It was also weird in Jason’s pep talk that if she were normal, she wouldn’t have met and fallen in love with Bill. That love affair seemed so flawed and sooo yesterday that it seemed like a bogus line to fit into the script. But I suppose the writers want us to remember that Bill and Sookie are in fact on the same show. Right, that’s it.

Sookie’s faerie friends are making things intriguing, though. As they try to help her remember the night her parents were killed, Sookie not only taps into her mother’s thoughts, but the vampire’s as well. The Faeries seemed worried that she was able to tap into the Vampire’s mind. She also heard Claudine say his name, “Warlow,” which means the faerie that tried to take Sookie away two season’s ago will be back and knows this vamp.

Other notes:

  • Alcide has one darn hot sex scene with Nikki, but loses the wolf-pack fight against v-induced JD. It was a pretty sad fight scene and super quick with Alcide getting his ass seriously kicked. O.K. writers, I suppose you ran out of time on this one.
  • Pam is clearly embracing the top seat at Fangtasia and gives her little progeny Tara her own human to feed on. It looks like Tara is starting to embrace her new life and will probably fair well with the non-mainstreaming vampire movement.
  • While locked up by the supe-killers, Hoyte is forced to kill Jessica who’s been chained up in silver. He tricks the gang, pretends to kill Jessica to save her. But at this point, Hoyte needs to get over this Jessica situation and it’s getting tiresome hearing him say, “you f***ked my friend.” Yes, Hoyte, we know. Move on.

True Blood airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO and HBO Canada.
